Hold Those Tortillas

Texas 63, Texas Tech 56 (OT)

September 26, 2020 • Lubbock

There are comebacks, and then there are EPIC comebacks. Considering the hate that seeps out of Jones AT&T Stadium, this one qualifies as epic. With our Horns trailing by 15 with 3:13 to go, ESPN gave Tech a 99.9 percent win probability. But Sam & Co. never gave up, and WE NEVER DOUBTED. (OK, maybe just a little.) Two quick scoring drives and a 2-point conversion later, we were headed to overtime. A Texas TD followed by an INT gave us this giant W on the South Plains.

Pumpkin Power Down

Years ago my mom surprised Dede and me at a football game with some mallowcreme pumpkins. She called them “pumpkin power” and credited them with our Horns’ success that day. Since then, Dede and I pack some pumpkin power for random October games.

Alas, even the pumpkins couldn’t save our team from losing to the Horned Frogs. Our offense racked up a ton of yards, but four turnovers? Yikes.

Happy Houston Reunion

Texas 48, Rice 13

Sept. 14, 2019 • NRG Stadium, Houston

Now THAT’S more like it. The Horns handled the Owls, making Rice as malleable and the Krispie Treats.

The win was great, but the camaraderie was even better. We got to attend the game with our dear friend Wallis, a favorite Houstonian who doesn’t make it to Austin nearly enough.

Great friends + great seats + a W = a great day!

Lovin’ Lubbock

Texas 41, Texas Tech 34

Nov. 10, 2018 • Jones AT&T Stadium, Lubbock

Ever since Katie moved to Lubbock for college, I’ve been fortunate to attend several Tech games on the South Plains.

Pregame we feasted on the ATX original, Chuy’s, and relied on bona-fide Lubbock tortillas to spell Texas. Then we joined a friend’s tailgate and tried to keep warm in that West Texas wind.

Once inside the stadium, we found our seats on row 42. That’s when we discovered that the Longhorn Band went up to row 37! Being that close to so many sousaphones—yes, all 21(!!!) of them—meant we were all about that bass.

12_bwahahaThis time, the Horns were the ones with the late TD to secure the win. Sam hit Lil’Jordan Humphrey for the game-winner with 21 seconds left, saving many tortillas in the process. (After witnessing the flinging throughout the game, we were amused to see this dire warning on our way out!)

What the Shell, Take 2

Sept. 1, 2018 • FedEx Field, Washington, DC

Surely it wouldn’t happen again. After the 2017 game against the Terps, the Horns were shell-shocked, and head coach Tom Herman’s Texas debut was spoiled. So this time around, surely, SURELY the Horns would be victorious.

Nope.

The loss was a bitter start for a season that would turn out surprisingly sweet.

Texas Bowl, Our Texas Bowl

Texas 33, Missouri 16

Dec. 27, 2017 • Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl, NRG Stadium, Houston

It’s not every game that the MVP award goes to the punter, but man, did Michael Dickson deserve it! Ten of his 11 punts pinned Mizzou inside their own 15, and the Horns made the most of that. Our D score 9 points and forced four turnovers in this big win, which we hoped would send us into 2018 with big MO on our side.

It was great to get back to our bowl game ways, and beating Mizzou? That was SWEET.

Even sweeter? Getting to spend time with our Houston family while we were there.

The Horns won, but my spelling photo is lost! Oopsie. Good thing the Texas D was put together than my photo organization system.

With this win over #24 West Virginia, the Horns became bowl eligible. Hooray for extending the season!

Back in DKR’s day, the Frogs were “cockroaches”—just messing it up for everyone else. Not so much anymore! They’ve been messin’ with Texas lately, and that just ain’t right.

At least this “road game” is a local one for us Fort Worth residents!

Texas 38, Baylor 7

Oct. 28, 2017 • McLane Stadium, Waco

For years we had watched Baylor’s new football home take shape, its skeleton rising above the Brazos each time we passed it as we headed down (or up) I-35. McLane Stadium opened in 2014, but the first time the Horns played there in ’15, we were busy and couldn’t make the drive. Seeing a game in this “House That RGIII Built” was a long time coming.

So was this win. After back-to-back losses against those teams from the land of land thieves, it was good to take this big W from Waco.

Twistered

Texas 17, Iowa State 7

Sept. 28, 2017 • Ames, Iowa

For this (thankfully) rare Thursday night game, I resorted to Bugles, a.k.a. “hats for your fingers,” because they resemble cyclones. This one turned out to be a ride fit for a twister, with great plays offset by boneheaded moves, crushing defensive lapses undone by instant replay.

To repeat DKR’s oft-quoted line: “Ol’ ugly is better than ol’ nothing.” And whadyaknow, we’re undefeated in conference play!

Hook ’em!
